WOW!House

The Studio was thrilled to be invited to design the Study for WOW!House, the Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour's first ever full-scale concept event. Working with leading designers and interiors brands, WOW!House provided never-ending inspiration for decorating rooms within the home. Lasting for the month of June during 2022, the WOW!House proved a chance to push boundaries and design a study space from complete carte blanche. A rare moment to design without a client, it enabled a freeing approach to interior design that inspired thousands of visitors.

The Space

Working with a small space provided an opportunity to hone in on layout and flow; it needed to be a space that functioned as a work place but also as a space to entertain friends or work colleagues. With this in mind, the studio book-ended the slim space with a large, sculptural desk and a chaise longue and statement artwork, helping to create a sense of division. The studio took great joy in experimenting with materiality and exceptional furniture and lighting pieces as well as pushing the traditional concepts of surface design. A delicate hand-painted metal floor contrasted with deep red moire silk ceiling whilst twisted rope edged the room and low-level lighting infused atmosphere and a sense of occasion. Numerous craftspeople and specialist suppliers were involved in the project, from delicate tapestries to crackled gesso and hand-painted detailing, traditional French passementerie to rich silk fabrics and international art installations.

The Muse

Tasked with designing the study space, the studio first sought to establish who this room was for. Coming up with the idea of a muse, it enabled the studio to introduce a sense of theatrics to the design. Stephanie has long been inspired by Freddie Mercury - the clothes, energy and unbounding uniqueness — and she found herself constantly thinking of his 'Killer Queen' from the 1974 Queen hit. To her the 'Killer Queen' is a strong, independent woman who travels the world, has broad interests and a rich life. She dresses well and you always want to talk with her - she is sharp and intelligent yet has a wild side that makes for the best experiences. With the Killer Queen in mind, the studio designed a study that was deeply layered, filled with rich materials and objet, all reflecting the eclectic and adventurous life of the Killer Queen.

‘Magnify’

‘Behave’

‘Working Late’

We’ve sought a design that straddles heritage and contemporary styling, for instance, we’ve chosen to use a wallpaper that takes inspiration from traditional tortoiseshell (something that has been around for centuries) but that has been reworked and reinvigorated for the modern day. By using a rich racing green tone, the tortoise shell pattern now feels unique and unexpected. Similarly, we have played with Moiré silk — a sumptuous fabric traditionally used for drapery and fashion — but instead we have literally turned things on its head and used it to upholster the ceiling. This is the thing about our muse — she takes traditional elements and thoughts and translates them for the modern day.
